South African Banks
The banking system in South Africa is world-class. The principal banks are ABSA, National, Standard, and Nedbank.
Bank opening hours vary but are generally 09:00 to 15:30 on weekdays and 09:00 to 11:00 on Saturday. Banks are closed on Sundays and Public Holidays. Some smaller branches have limited operating hours.
If you need to go into the bank, withdrawals can be done over the counter using your passport. Many banks provide foreign exchange facilities.
Credit Cards & Debit Cards
Most major international credit and debit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa and their affiliates are widely accepted in South Africa.
Overseas purchases will normally incur a British bank transaction charge. Purchases with a credit card do not usually incur a transaction charge and this may be a cheaper option. Money Overview

Cash dispensers (ATM)
Cash dispensers are called ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) in South Africa. They are widely available outside most banks, or within an enclosed lobby.
Many ATMs have a security guard stationed next to them, particularly during the day and early evening. For added piece of mind we advise you to only use ATMs with such a guard.
If there is no security and you see someone acting suspicious, don’t use that ATM.
You can withdraw cash using your Visa or MasterCard debit card at almost any ATM – check with your bank what the transaction charges will be before you leave Britain.
There is a high incidence of credit card fraud and fraud involving ATMs in South Africa.
Users of ATMs should be vigilant to ensure their Personal Identification Number (PIN) is not observed by others when withdrawing money or purchasing goods in a shop.
Offers of assistance from bystanders should be refused. Closely protect any documents containing details of credit card, PIN and bank accounts.
