The establishment of the new park is needed following successful land claims on a section of the Vaalbos National Park.
Phase one of the move was completed in March and saw 234 animals relocated to other national parks like Tankwa and Augrabies National Parks in the Northern Cape, Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape and Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo. Phase two was scheduled specifically for the winter season for heat sensitive animals, started in June and 346 animals were moved.
The animals moved included 5 White Rhinos; 11 Giraffe; 163 Red Hartebeest; 43 Blue Wildebeest; 39 Tsessebe; 85 Gemsbok; 36 Plains Zebra; 76 Springbok; 10 Eland and 141 Cape Buffalo.

The remaining animals are being moved in Phase three, commencing in September when weather conditions are favourable to move delicate animals which are sensitive to cold temperatures, such as the Black Rhino. The capture teams have been careful not to disturb the mating season for various species and those animals that are already pregnant Phase three is well timed to coincide with the birth of new calves during spring when there is plenty of vegetation in the new park.
Vaalbos is now closed and the new park is not yet open to the public.
